The States Adding The Most Clean Jobs Right Now

The States Adding The Most Clean Jobs Right Now

Upwards of 12,500 clean energy and clean transportation jobs were announced in the second quarter of 2014, more than double those announced in the first three months of the year, according to a report from nonprofit business group EnvironmentalEntrepreneurs. A significant number of these jobs will allow states to fulfill federal carbon pollution standards introduced as part of the Clean Power Plan announced in June and meant to reduce carbon dioxide emissions by 30% below 2005 levels over the next decade and a half. Each state can choose how best to achieve these standards and the report notes that “some governors have said fostering the growth of the clean power and energy efficiency sectors in their states is one of the best ways to both meet the standards and expand economic opportunities.”

U.N. Draft Report Lists Unchecked Emissions’ Risks

Runaway growth in the emission of greenhouse gases is swamping all political efforts to deal with the problem, raising the risk of “severe, pervasive and irreversible impacts” over the coming decades, according to a draft of a major new United Nations report.

Global warming is already cutting grain production by several percentage points, the report found, and that could grow much worse if emissions continue unchecked. Higher seas, devastating heat waves, torrential rain and other climate extremes are also being felt around the world as a result of human-produced emissions, the draft report said, and those problems are likely to intensify unless the gases are brought under control.

Australian Repeal Deals Blow to Global Carbon-Emission Plans

Australian Repeal Deals Blow to Global Carbon-Emission Plans

Australia’s repeal of a pioneering tax on carbon emissions has dealt a sharp blow to struggling international efforts to coordinate on global warming and comes ahead of key climate-change talks next year. On July 17, Australia’s parliament pulled the plug on the 2012 tax, which charged 348 businesses such as steelmakers and power companies A$25.40 (US$24) per ton of carbon dioxide emitted. The levy was slated to evolve next year into an emissions-trading system that would link to the European Union’s.

EU considers energy savings goal below 30 percent

The European Commission is considering an energy saving goal for 2030 of less than 30 percent, according to a document seen by Reuters, setting it at odds with designated Commission President Jean-Claude Juncker. How ambitious an energy efficiency goal the European Union should set has taken on increased urgency in the context of the Ukraine crisis because using less energy would curb the EU’s reliance on Russian gas.
