EU Solar Firms Accuse Chinese Rivals

European solar-panel manufacturers alleged widespread violations of a settlement between the European Union and China over solar-panel exports, a move that could reopen a dispute that threatened to explode into a trade war last year. A group of European manufacturers, led by Germany’s SolarWorld AGSWVK.XE +1.75% , on Wednesday told the European Commission that large Chinese firms such as LDK Solar Co. LDKSY +1.56% and JinkoSolar Holding Co. JKS +1.88%have been exporting their panels to Europe below a minimum price stipulated by last year’s settlement.

A Gas Cache, Now Under Shaky Ground

Deep below the cow pastures and farming villages in this picturesque northeastern corner of the Netherlands lies an extraordinary resource: Europe’s largest source of natural gas, known as the Groningen gas field. Since its discovery in Groningen Province in 1959, the field has powered the economy of the Netherlands and has been a reliable supply of gas for Northern Europe. Five decades and counting is a remarkable run of productivity for a field of fossil fuel.

Obama unveils historic rules to reduce coal pollution by 30%

The Obama administration unveiled historic environment rules cutting carbon pollution from power plants by 30% on Monday, spurring prospects for a global deal to end climate change but setting up an epic battle over the environment in this year’s mid-term elections. The new rules, formally announced by the Environmental Protection Agency, represent the first time Barack Obama, or any other president, has moved to regulate carbon pollution from power plants – the largest single source of carbon dioxide emissions that cause climate change.

For a Canadian Province, Gas Boom Presents a Conundrum

As nations rush to ship vast new stores of natural gas across oceans, the climate change implications of the fuel are coming under increased scrutiny. Perhaps nowhere is the debate so intense as in British Columbia, a province in western Canada where there are plans to export large quantities ofnatural gas to Asia. Environmentalists fear that the production and processing of the gas for export could upend the province’s aggressiveclimate change policies, which include an emissions-reduction goal and an unusual carbon tax system.

Americans care deeply about ‘global warming’ – but not ‘climate change’

Barack Obama, scientists and campaigners have all looked at how to engage Americans more powerfully on the environment. Now researchers have come up with one critical piece of advice: do say “global warming”, don’t say “climate change”. New research released on Tuesday found Americans care more deeply when the term “global warming” is used to describe the major environmental challenge. “Climate change”, in contrast, leaves them relatively cold.

Green Economy: Search for growth hits progress on environment

Green Economy: Search for growth hits progress on environment

Developed by a New York start-up, a controllable radiator cover means residents of homes heated by old steam systems no longer have to waste energy in winter by opening windows to cool off. Radiator Labs is among many companies that see business opportunities in green technologies. But while both start-ups and multinationals are capitalising on these, policy makers have been slower to act. “Ten years ago I would have said that policy leaders were out front and companies were following regarding the recognition and acknowledgment of sustainability,” says Mindy Lubber, president of Ceres, a US-based coalition of investors and environmental groups. “That has flipped substantially.
