Climate Change Outpaces Evolution

Climate Change Outpaces Evolution

Nature doesn’t like to be rushed. But to keep up with climate change, many animals will need to evolve 10,000 times faster than they have in the past, a new study suggests.
Manmade climate change — fueled by excess greenhouse gases in the atmosphere, namely carbon dioxide — is expected to raise global temperatures by up to 10.8 degrees Fahrenheit (6 Celsius) within the next 100 years. That will transform many ecosystems in just a few generations, forcing wildlife to either evolve quickly or risk extinction.

EU-China solar panel anti-dumping talks face fresh flare-up

Efforts by the EU and China to settle a dispute over solar panels have hit an impasse, threatening to reheat simmering tensions between two of the world’s largest trading partners.

After weeks of intense discussions, the European Commission, the EU’s executive arm, had been hoping to close a deal this week, in which Chinese exporters agree – in lieu of paying punitive tariffs – not to sell their products in the EU below an agreed minimum price.

RSPO members implicated in air pollution crisis, says Greenpeace

Companies which are part of the industry-led organisation specifically created to promote sustainable palm oil production have been implicated in the Indonesian forest fires which caused Asia’s worst air pollution crisisin decades.

Greenpeace has released maps which it says show fire hotspots in the Riau province of Sumatra on plantation land owned by subsidiaries of member companies of the Roundtable on Sustainable Palm Oil (RSPO). The companies include Jatim Jaya Perkasa – an alleged past offender which missed two deadlines to provide information to the RSPO, and palm oil giant the Sime Darby group – which the RSPO had cleared of wrongdoing earlier this week.

Why Obama ditched green jobs from his climate change rhetoric

Why Obama ditched green jobs from his climate change rhetoric

If you watched President Obama’s major speech on climate change, you may have noticed a recurrent phrase: “our children.” The president said the word “children” fifteen separate times in the speech. He also spoke repeatedly about “future generations” and how a sweltering planet imperils them. The threat of climate itself, meanwhile, garnered considerable scientific detail in the speech, replete with references to dangerous and destructive impacts that are already occurring—from rising seas to parched land and torched forests.
