Cameron pledges cash for communities to ease path for UK fracking
The pledge, made on Monday, coincides with an announcement by France’s Total that it will spend about $50m on exploring for shale gas in the East Midlands, making it the first oil major to invest in the UK’s fledgling sector. The prime minister said that local authorities will be able to keep 100 per cent of rates they collect from shale sites – up from the usual 50 per cent – amounting to an estimated £1.7m for a 12-well site. Fracking incentives will give councils ‘contradictory roles’
Government moves to persuade councils to support fracking have been condemned as giving them “contradictory roles” and undermining trust in local government decisions, according to anti-fracking campaigners and an MP whose constituency has a site that is being explored for drilling. The prime minister, David Cameron, announced on a visit to a site close to Gainsborough in Lincolnshire on Monday that councils would be allowed to keep 100% of business rates from fracking operations rather than 50% as before, on top of other local incentives already announced. Cameron said that Britain is “going all out for shale” as the French oil major Total announced it was taking a 40% share in the drilling operations in the Gainsborough trough. (altro…)

Centrica eyes growth and welcome beyond UK
That must make a nice change. Even as Centrica, the owner of British Gas, continues to be classed as a public enemy in the UK, it is being greeted with open arms in Ireland. The consortium which it leads has been declared the preferred bidder for Bord Gáis Energy and it has been hailed as an “international strategic investor”. It may have been Irish government relief talking at having got the deal away, at an enterprise value of up to €1.12bn. Still, it suggests that Centrica’s hopes of investing in the Irish oil and gas industry will get a fair hearing. (altro…)

Eni fa utili ma ha una perdita operativa di oltre un miliardo nel gas & power
Il gas naturale, storico punto di forza dell’Eni, rischia di diventare il suo tallone d’Achille. Il nuovo blocco del gasdotto Greenstream, dopo quello verificatosi qualche anno fa durante l’insurrezione che portò alla caduta del regime di Gheddafi, rappresenta un danno per i conti del gruppo. Ma il problema non è tanto e solo la Libia.
Se analizziamo il bilancio scopriamo che la divisione Gas & Power (vendite di metano e di energia elettrica) ha chiuso il terzo trimestre del 2013, cioè giugno, luglio e settembre, con una perdita operativa rettificata (adjusted) di 356 milioni, in peggioramento del 17% rispetto a quella dello stesso periodo dell’anno precedente. Ad aggravare i conti, da un lato il continuo deterioramento dei prezzi di vendita ai grandi clienti italiani per effetto di una domanda del gas sempre più debole in un mercato sempre più competitivo, dall’altro i margini negativi nella produzione di elettricità. La perdita netta rettificata della divisione si è attetsta nel trimestre a 115 milioni, superiore di 50 milioni a quella dello stesso periodo dell’anno prima. (altro…)
Ukraine’s shale gas lures western companies
The shale gas revolution has been slow to gain momentum in Europe – held back by environmental concerns, political caution and tricky geology. But one country where it may be taking off is Ukraine. Last week, Kiev signed a potentially $10bn production-sharing agreement with Chevron of the US – its second of the year – to explore for and produce shale gas in the 6,300 sq km Oleska field in western Ukraine. In January, Royal Dutch Shell signed a similar deal covering the nearly 8,000 sq km Yuzivska field in the east of the country. (altro…)
Chevron and Ukraine Set Shale Gas Deal
Western oil companies trying to find shale gas in Europe are discovering that Ukraine, eager to reduce its dependence on Russian energy imports, is one of their most willing partners. On Tuesday, Chevron signed a 50-year agreement with the Ukrainian government to develop oil and gas in western Ukraine. The government said that Chevron would spend $350 million on the exploratory phase of the project and that the total investment could reach $10 billion. (altro…)

A ottobre, il dollaro si è deprezzato nei confronti dell’euro sino a superare quota 1,38€/$ (record da ottobre 2011). La valuta americana ha costantemente perso terreno nei confronti della divisa europea a partire dal “congelamento” dell’intervento militare statunitense in Siria: infatti il 6 settembre il cambio quotava 1,31€/$ dopo essersi mantenuto in un range compreso tra 1,32/34€/$ durante il tesissimo mese di agosto. Fracking Rules Set in Spain to Boost Shale Gas, Oil Work
Spain completed ground rules for oil and gas drillers to use hydraulic fracturing, or fracking, spurring shale-exploration projects by endorsing the contested technology that they need. The main oil-exploration law was modified to specifically allow the water-intensive drilling technique in legislation published today that becomes effective tomorrow. In the same law, fracking projects across Spain will now be required to meet environmental-impact rules. That means the use of pressurized water and chemicals to break up rocks to unlock fuel may be scrutinized for potential impacts on aquifers to air quality. (altro…)
